How to become a Groovy developer ?

Apache Groovy is a Java Virtual Machine (JVM)-based programming language. It is dynamic in nature, with features for static typing and static compilation. Groovy is a programming language that aims to increase developer productivity by using simple, familiar, and easy-to-learn grammar. Groovy is a Java enhancer since it gives programs more freedom and even offers new capabilities (those that have already been developed can be improved or they can be made from scratch).

Groovy contains various convenience functions that make it look like Python or Ruby. The benefit of the Groovy language is that it may significantly minimize your boilerplate Java code. Groovy is particularly useful since it can easily coexist with Java in the same project.

What is the scope of Groovy development?

The Apache Groovy programming language is one of the first JVM-compatible alternative programming languages (Java Virtual Machine). In 2020, the Java-syntax compatible Groovy script turned 17 years old. People may believe that the emergence of more modern JVM languages, such as Kotlin, has rendered Groovy obsolete.

That couldn't be much further from the truth!

The Groovy community is still going strong, and a group of contributors is actively working on the Groovy syntax. The language is one of the most widely used libraries in the Java environment, with a wide range of frameworks supporting it. Groovy makes unit and automated testing easy, which is one of the reasons for its popularity. What's evident is that when utilized appropriately, it's a powerful tool.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a Groovy developer?

To design and construct the next generation of a company's apps, Groovy developers cooperate with a team of skilled engineers. In order to build the product, other app developers and technical teams collaborate closely with the Groovy developers.

A developer's key responsibilities after securing remote Groovy developer jobs are as follows

  • Design and construct modular elements.
  • Create production code to add new features and resolve bugs.
  • In Jenkins, you may orchestrate pipelines and automate processes.
  • Create automated tests and scripts by designing and writing them.
  • Participate in code reviews and pull requests with your peers.
  • Contribute to product advancements by collaborating with SCRUM teams.
  • Assist cross-functional teams in obtaining, conveying, and formalizing client needs.
  • To satisfy the app's needs, work on schedule, chaining, and converting asynchronous activities.

How to become a Groovy developer?

Let's move on to the steps that must be taken to pursue a job as a Groovy developer. To begin, keep in mind that no academic degree is required to become a Groovy developer. You can learn Groovy programming and create a profession out of it whether you're a graduate or non-graduate, experienced or inexperienced. All that is required is practical experience and understanding of the relevant technical and non-technical aspects.

However, you may have heard that remote Groovy development positions require a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a similar subject. This is true for numerous reasons: first, having a relevant academic background will help you gain a better grasp of computer programming and web development, which will help you learn Groovy development much more quickly. Second, many firms need Groovy developers to have a specific level of education, making it easier for you to find rewarding work.

Let's look at the talents and approaches you'll need to be a successful Groovy developer:

Skills required to become a Groovy developer

1. Java skills

Groovy developers work on a variety of projects, from online applications to desktop applications, mobile apps, and cloud systems. Java's capabilities also extend to Python-based Big Data projects. As a Groovy developer, you should think about the Java technologies listed below.

  • Object-oriented programming principles
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and other relational databases.
  • Bitbucket and Git – two popular version control systems.
  • Using IntelliJ IDEA as an IDE (Integrated Development Environment).
  • HTML, CSS, and jQuery – examples of front-end web technology.

2. Software architecture and design

In the software development process, software design and architecture are extremely important. You must be quick to identify and build the correct technology stack and architecture for the application as a Groovy developer. A solid grasp of software architecture will set you apart from other engineers, and it will also help you advance in your profession.

3. Linux

Linux is also commonly used as the foundation for a development environment. You can't always build and test your code on a local workstation; you need a real-world environment that mimics how your app will be used in the real world. You can't put untested code into production without putting your organization in danger, therefore you'll need to employ a test environment. Typically, this refers to Linux.

Basic Linux skills have a wide range of applications in the real world. You'll need to know how to unpack and configure Ruby on Rails to set up your environment if you're going to perform any programming with it. If you're writing code for the Linux platform, you'll need to understand how to test it and detect faults.

4. Containers such as Kubernetes or Docker

Docker makes it easier to "build" containers, whereas Kubernetes makes it possible to "manage" them in real-time. Use Docker to package and ship the software. And Kubernetes to launch and scale your app. Startups and small businesses with fewer containers can generally manage them without Kubernetes, but as businesses develop, their infrastructure demands will increase, and the number of containers will grow as well, making management more challenging. This is where Kubernetes makes a grand entry into the picture.

Docker and Kubernetes, when used together, are digital transformation enablers and technologies for contemporary cloud architecture. For speedier application deployments and releases, using both has become the new industry standard. Understanding the high-level differences between Docker and Kubernetes while designing your stack is strongly advised.

5. AWS and Azure

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is an Amazon cloud service platform that offers services in a variety of categories, including computation, storage, delivery, and other features that help businesses scale and thrive. We may use these domains on the cloud platform as services, which can be utilized to develop and deploy many sorts of applications. Microsoft Azure is a cloud service platform developed by Microsoft that offers services in a variety of fields, including compute, storage, database, networking, developer tools, and other features that help businesses scale and flourish. Platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS), and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are three Azure services that developers and software employees may use to create, deploy, and manage applications, services and applications in the cloud.
