How to become a Sr. Back-end developer ?

In recent years, web development has become a popular career choice, as organizations have realized that their online presence directly affects their ability to attract leads. As a result, many people have begun to seek out qualified candidates who are skilled in utilizing the latest web technologies to build and design websites to help them grow.

Web developers who specialize in back-end development are responsible for managing the interchange of data between the server and users. Their primary focus is developing all server-side logic, defining and maintaining the central database, and ensuring high performance and responsiveness to requests from front-end developers. They will also be responsible for integrating front-end elements built by other teams into the application.

While the front end of a website is outward-facing, the back end contains the programming infrastructure. In other words, the back end developer provides the foundation for all of the complex technical functions that go into running a website.

What is the scope in back-end development?

There is a great demand for web developers as the booming tech industry creates new jobs and improves accessibility. As a result, remote back-end developer jobs are increasing.

Companies increasingly depend on remote back-end developers to take care of software scalability and security. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have led to the creation of a new breed of entrepreneurs, who are now taking advantage of the demand-supply gap. This means that many more products need to be built, which in turn means more opportunities for back-end developers.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a Sr. back-end developer?

A web application developer working on the back-end creates, integrates and maintains the server-side logic of a web application. The back-end developer writes the web services and APIs that front-end developers and mobile application developers use to build applications.

A senior back-end developer is in charge of managing data exchange between the server and the users. The developer will develop all server-side logic, define and maintain the central database, and ensure high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front-end. They will also integrate front-end elements built by other teams into the application.
Sr. Back-end developers shoulder the following responsibilities:

  • Incorporation of front-end developer-created user-facing elements with server-side logic
  • Developing reusable code and libraries for further use
  • Application optimization for maximum speed and scalability
  • Implementation of security and data protection
  • Develop and implement data storage solutions
  • Cooperate in the application development lifecycle as a whole
  • Collude with front-end developers, testers, QA leads, and project managers to deliver rigorous applications
  • Establish and document technical and design specifications
  • Create long-lasting and functional web applications using clean coding standards
  • Perform UI tests and optimize applications for improved performance

How to become a Sr. back-end developer?

To be a successful back end developer, one should have at least some formal training, and must have bachelor's degrees in computer science or advanced mathematics. In addition, to call oneself a back end developer requires an understanding of several languages and programs. These essential skills include Python, Java, SQL, NoSQL, and Git.

Aspiring development professionals can take a variety of routes to hone their skills. A four-year degree is the most common option, but if you’re unable to commit the time or funds necessary to complete an undergraduate study or you already hold a degree in another field you might want to consider alternative education solutions, such as a coding boot camp that teaches the technical skills that back end developers need in a short period and at a reasonable cost.

Moreover, to apply for senior back-end developer positions, you need to have hands-on experience of at least 2-3 years. So, ensure that you work on reputed projects or good companies to showcase your expertise.

Skills required to become a Sr. back-end developer

Learning fundamental skills is essential for getting high-paying Sr. back-end developers jobs. Here is everything you need to know!

1. Python

If you want to be a back end developer, you need to hone your Python skills. This programming language can do everything from simple web projects to more complex applications. It’s a popular choice for programmers in a variety of fields, from healthcare to finance to travel. Python’s popularity is due to the language’s support of multiple programming styles, which makes it ideal for web development. Because Python is a general-purpose language, developers can comfortably use procedural, functional, and object-oriented programming approaches. In addition to its flexible syntax, Python offers excellent data libraries and visualization capabilities. And in contrast to other languages that have elaborate grammar rules and obscure naming conventions, Python’s code reads as if it has been written in English.

2. PHP

PHP is a server-side programming language that is ubiquitous among web developers. It's a scripting language, making its learning curve easy to overcome for beginners, and it's open-source, so anyone can expand on it without paying licensing fees. Though back-end development teams often use languages like Java or C++ instead of PHP to code their web-based applications, being familiar with the basics of PHP as a web developer would certainly help your resume stand out in a crowded applicant pool.

3. Java

Java is a multi-paradigm programming language that is used widely for developing lots of applications. Java is a powerful, object-oriented language and also provides many features of other popular programming languages such as C and C++. Java is often mistakenly considered to be difficult to learn in contrast to languages like Python; nevertheless, it remains the most popular programming language among developers. On the whole, it has proved to be convenient and secure. Major e-commerce giants rely on Java programming to build their back-end. The majority of in-demand back-end developer jobs necessitate having Java skills in your skillset

4. Algorithms and Data Structures

To succeed as a back-end developer, you must be able to use logic to solve difficult problems. The ability to apply algorithms and data structures makes you stand out from the crowd. Every back-end developer should have a strong understanding of quick sort, bubble sort, selection sort, searching, and iterative algorithms.

If you are a back-end developer and you do not know data structures well, your work will be less efficient and difficult. Learning about data structures will give you the foundation to access and modify data in programming, making your job effective and easy.

5. Application Programming Interface (APIs)

An API is a program that allows different servers, clients, and users to communicate on the internet. Servers and clients make up the back-end of an application, while users are its front-end. APIs allow data to be transferred on the internet, which is why they are important for developers. JSON and XML are software tools used by web developers to shave off excess data between a server and a database.
