How to become a mobile developer ?

There is an app for nearly everything now! Everything is at your fingertips and operates with just a tap, from coffee to world news.

All this is made possible by mobile developers specializing in mobile technology to build apps for system platforms like Microsoft’s Windows, Apple’s iOS, and Google’s Android mobile devices.

Mobile developers possess robust technical knowledge and implement innovative applications ranging from casual games to complex communication tools. They collaborate with function designers and other programmers to accurately satisfy the customer's needs. They are responsible for the technical feasibility of an application.

With the exponential growth in mobile users and mobile applications, remote mobile developer jobs have seen a surge in demand in recent years.

What is the scope in mobile development?

With the increasing use of mobile devices, the demand for developers has risen in every sector, including retail, healthcare, travel and tourism, and media, to name a few. Revenue across most mobile app segments is estimated to reach around $613 billion by 2025. Needless to say, mobile developer jobs remain in demand.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a mobile developer?

The responsibilities of mobile developers vary depending on their experience and the type of platform they use. They create, maintain, and implement the source code that comprises an application. They also coordinate with the development team to handle prototype design and indication program unit structure.

Typically, the responsibilities of mobile developers comprise:

  • Development of APIs for supporting mobile functionality.
  • Cooperating with UX/UI designers and programmers to implement new apps or further develop existing apps.
  • Consulting with customers and the development team to convert their needs into technical requirements.
  • Ensure consistency between the technical and the functional side.
  • Establish proper linking between the back-end and front-end.
  • Stay relevant to the latest terminology and concepts for coding mobile apps.
  • Utilize existing web applications for apps.
  • Work closely with various teams to constantly innovate app functionality and design.

How to become a mobile developer?

There is no dedicated path to take to become a mobile developer. While the typical way is through an IT degree and technical background, anyone can launch a career as a mobile developer with dedicated practice.

Before you apply for remote mobile developer jobs, here are a few details to note.

  • Decide your learning path: While most experienced professionals in mobile development have a Bachelor's or a Master’s degree in computer science, others are self-taught enthusiasts. There is no one way to learn mobile development. You can take online courses or attend boot camps to master the necessary skills and effectively build an attractive portfolio.
  • Choose your platform: There are two types of mobile developers, iOS and Android.

1. iOS developers: They create, test, and update apps for iOS devices. They use technologies like Xcode, a development environment, and Swift, the primary iOS programming language. iOS developers create applications from the ground up for iOS devices.

2. Android developer: Android is regarded as the most popular mobile operating system. The developers are in charge of creating applications for Android-powered devices. They then run code through a series of tests to ensure it is error-free and usable.

Once you're confident in your skills, you need to create a well-written mobile developer resume to grab the attention of potential employers.

Note that you can choose Android or iOS and later transition from one to the other.

Skills required to become a mobile developer

Android and iOS vary in their use of programming languages. Most Android coding is done in Java, and iOS development involves C#, C++, or Swift.

1. Swift

Swift is a multi-paradigm compiled programming language developed by Apple and is primarily used for iOS app development. Easy to learn and frequently updated, it has features like simplifying common patterns, generics, and type interfaces to enable a high level of interactivity in development.

The language is also fast and secure. Hence, a deep understanding of Swift and its core concepts is necessary to become a successful iOS developer.

2. UIKit

UIkit is a framework that provides the infrastructure to help iOS developers design their user interfaces. It has a window and views architecture for implementing the interface and an event-handling infrastructure to deliver multi-touch and other input types to an app.

The framework also supports animation, display and text management, resource management, drawing and printing, and accessibility support. Familiarity with UIKit ensures hassle-free construction and management of event-driven UI for iOS apps.

3. Xcode

Xcode is the most versatile IDE in the iOS app development community. Provided by Apple, it makes it easy to write applications for any Apple device. It includes editors, compilers, and other tools to help complete the coding, compilation, loading, testing, and deployment of iOS apps from an individual location.

As an iOS developer, you should understand the various features of the Xcode tool and be able to navigate your way through the code.

4. Java

Java is an object-oriented programming language used in the majority of Android applications. It is data-type sensitive, so developers must be careful while assigning memory resources or specifying the required data types for their applications.

With Java, you get a precise code that clearly defines the function of each component of an application, leaving no space for ambiguity.

5. Understanding of XML

XML is a structured markup language developed as a standard method of encoding data for mobile applications. In a nutshell, it enables information to be passed between devices consistently and understandably.

Android developers use XML to create layouts which serve as the foundational UI definition for Android applications. This is why understanding the fundamentals of XML is a necessary skill.

6. Kotlin

Kotlin, along with Java, is an official Android development language. It has object-oriented and functional constructs, making it ideal for functional programming.

Kotlin is more concise and expressive than Java. It can be used for any kind of development, including server-side, client-side, and Android development. Its null-safe design helps boost productivity and code safety.

7. Android SDK

An SDK or software development kit is a set of pre-packaged code or modules of Java code that give developers access to mobile device functions like the camera and accelerometer. The most significant component of the Android SDK is a library called Gradle. It keeps code organized when a social media platform needs to be integrated with an app. SDKs offer various modules for Android developers to put together an Android application.

Besides Android and iOS mobile development platforms, expertise in API development platforms, cross-platform app development frameworks, and responsive design for mobile web apps is an added advantage to landing mobile developer jobs.
