Skills required to become a Java developer
Java developers need certain skills to have the competitive edge in their careers. Some of these are:
1. Basic Java skills
As a Java developer you should have an understanding of Object-oriented programming principles, relational databases like MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL, popular version control systems like Bitbucket and Git, IDEs (integrated development environments) like IntelliJ IDEA, and front-end technologies for web like HTML, CSS, and jQuery.
2. Software design and architecture
Java developers need to be able to see the true picture and decide on the right technology stack and architecture to implement in an application. Hence, it’s important to learn software design and architecture.
3. Spring framework 5
Spring is based on the MVC framework that has distinct business, operations, business and representation layers. Spring is widely used by developers working online Java jobs for its elegant syntax, object injection capabilities, simplicity and automation testing tools like JUnit 5.
4. Android + Kotlin
Knowledge of Kotlin for developing Android applications can give you a competitive edge. The Android platform is moving towards this modified version of Java.
5. Unit Testing
In Java, the deployment and assembly of applications is not very fast. This is where unit testing tools like TestNG and JUnit come into play. They speed up the writing of automated tests, give immediate feedback on passed tests, and offer an easy syntax.
6. Principles of SOLID
SOLID is an acronym for five object-oriented design principles that help developers write better code. It is important for Java developers to understand the SOLID principles because they help to ensure that code is maintainable, testable, and extensible.
7. DevOps Tools
Java developers have to be familiar with continuous deployment, continuous integration, and Jenkins’s role in both the processes. Senior-level developers need strong knowledge of popular DevOps tools like Kubernetes, Maven, Chef, Gradle, and Docker as their responsibilities include implementing coding best practices and creating scripts and manuals.
