STEM Experts/Annotators

About Turing:

Based in San Francisco, California, Turing is the world’s leading research accelerator for frontier AI labs and a trusted partner for global enterprises deploying advanced AI systems. Turing supports customers in two ways: first, by accelerating frontier research with high-quality data, advanced training pipelines, plus top AI researchers who specialize in coding, reasoning, STEM, multilinguality, multimodality, and agents; and second, by applying that expertise to help enterprises transform AI from proof of concept into proprietary intelligence with systems that perform reliably, deliver measurable impact, and drive lasting results on the P&L

Role Overview:

  • Evaluate and rate frontier model responses to advanced problems in your STEM discipline against strict rubrics — factual and scientific correctness, reasoning rigor, and well-posedness.
  • Author gold-standard reference answers and worked explanations that clearly separate correct from incorrect model outputs.
  • Adjudicate disagreements between raters and act as the final tie-breaker on contested or high-difficulty items.
  • Run second-pass QC on other annotators' ratings; identify systematic errors and help calibrate the rater pool.
  • Write clear, defensible rationales documenting why an output is correct or incorrect.
  • Iterate on tasks to meet multi-judge evaluation criteria across LLM judges (e.g., GPT, Gemini, Nemotron).
  • Participate in calibration sessions, reviews, and syncs during overlap hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in a STEM field.
  • Deep subject-matter expertise in at least one STEM discipline (e.g., physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, or engineering).
  • Demonstrated expert judgment in evaluating technical correctness — able to justify a rating, not just assign one.
  • Ability to write rigorous, well-posed problems with clear constraints and expected answers.
  • Meticulous attention to detail against strict rubrics for correctness, discriminativeness, and rigor.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in AI data annotation, model evaluation, RLHF, or red-teaming.
  • Familiarity with LLM evaluation frameworks or coding/reasoning benchmarks.
  • Experience leading, reviewing, or calibrating annotator or rater teams.
  • Published research or peer-reviewed work in a STEM domain.
  • Comfort with quantitative or technical tools relevant to your field (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, Mathematica, or domain-specific software).

Additional Details:

  • Applications: Reviewed on a rolling basis - candidates are assessed as they apply
  • Engagement type: Contractor assignment/freelancer (no medical/paid leave)
