Skills required to become a front-end developer
The first step is to start learning the fundamental skills that can get you high-paying remote front-end web developer jobs. Here’s what you need to know.
1. HTML & CSS
Hypertext markup language (HTML) and cascading style sheets (CSS) tie together a website’s appearance. HTML provides the structure, while CSS adds movement to different elements, such as animated GIFs, parallax scrollers (like in the Tumblr app or this site), and visually appealing images that respond well under different browser sizes.
2. JavaScript
JavaScript allows you to add interactive features to sites, such as polls, slideshows, and forms that automatically detect touchscreen users’ clicks. This client-side programming language lets you add dynamic features, including but not limited to, page animation, scrolling, audio, and video.
3. jQuery
jQuery is a JavaScript library that offers an easier way to build web pages by letting you add ready-made elements to your site and even modify them.
4. Frameworks and Libraries
Frameworks are prewritten code modules for common website elements, such as login and search interfaces. They streamline handling specific routines and make websites easier to develop. Popular JavaScript frameworks include AngularJS, Ember JS, and React JS.
5. RESTful Services/APIs
In RESTful services and application programming interfaces (APIs), data is transmitted to and from an API in a structured format, such as XML or JSON. Knowledge of these two can help you extend your front-end framework beyond its native functionalities.
6. Responsive/Mobile Design
Mobile design can include a responsive design where a site will adapt based on the device being used: phone, tablet, or desktop. Responsive and mobile design skills always appear in job listings for front-end developer remote jobs due to their prominent role in digital marketing.
7. Cross-Browser Development
With different browsers taking a unique approach to display web pages, getting them all to display a site consistently is often tricky. Hence, mastering cross-browser development is vital.
8. Content management systems
Most websites are built using a content management system (CMS), such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Magento. Being familiar with such platforms can give you a marketable skill and make you more appealing to companies that need their systems maintained or updated.
9. Testing/Debugging
Testing and debugging are particularly valuable skills when applying for remote front-end developer jobs. They ensure programs run as they should before releasing them for use.
10. Git/Version Control
Developers often call this "one of the vital job skills" because knowing how to use Git is necessary for most development jobs. Organizations often use a version management system so that if an issue is identified on the production website, they can return to the previous version's product. Git stands out as the first choice. It enables developers to track changes effectively, ensuring smoother and more controlled development processes.
