How to become a remote Clojure developer ?

Clojure is a high-level and dynamic functional programming language used by developers to build solutions across industries. The language has been built taking inspiration from LISP and comes packed with compilers capable of running on both Java and .NET runtime environments. The language is extensively used for building data-driven services making it a preferred choice for modern business applications. Clojure is also a language that suits data mining/commercial-AI and large-scale predictions. The language’s concurrent features can also aid data-heavy domains, especially where parallel processing is mandatory.

Over the past decade, Clojure as a programming language has become a preferred choice for developers. It is a clean and efficient language and requires fewer codes compared to other popular languages/alternatives. This greatly helps to increase the productivity of development teams and also lowers the chances of bugs holding back performance. Such features make working with Clojure advantageous to developers making it a preferred choice. So, if you’re goal is to work as one of the top Clojure developers, this guide should help you to understand the process involved.

What is the scope of Clojure development?

Skills required to become a Clojure developer

In order to build a successful career as a Clojure developer, developers need to possess expertise in working with technologies. To work as a Clojure developer you’ll need to develop capabilities of working with:

1. Clojure

One of the primary skills required to build a career in Clojure development is a strong understanding of the language. As mentioned at the start, it is a high-level and dynamic functional programming language that has significant importance in multiple industries. The language is based on LISP programming principles and is well-suited for modern data-driven processes. As a language, it comes packed with features that allows developers to work with both Java and .NET runtime environments. Based on the increase of data-driven applications and enterprise solutions, thorough knowledge of Clojure will help you to secure the best available opportunities.

2. Java

Knowledge of Java can also be considered as a primary language for a Clojure expert. It is currently one of the most widely used programming languages as it offers support for several niches insoftware development. Over the years of being in use, Java has become a preferred choice of developers as it helps to write and run codes anywhere irrespective of the architecture of the system. The language also seems to check off every requirement for modern software development projects. Java is also well known for advantages like the adding the ability to compile codes on any platform that supports the Java Runtime Environment. So, if you plan to define your career as a Clojure developer, knowledge of Java development would be really helpful.

3. Cloud services

Today almost every software and web development process utilizes cloud services in some capacity. A modern alternative of legacy hosting and data storage solutions, the ability to configure, scale, and maintain cloud services is essential. Developers do not only need to possess familiarity with such technologies but rather deep understanding would be more helpful. Currently there are several options available but AWS and Google Cloud are two of the most popular options. Cloud services do not only allow organizations to part with expensive in-house hosting expenses but also devise more cost-effective development strategies.

4. Versioning tools

Use of version control systems have become quite common in th modern software development industry. Based on the modern approach of modular development, versioning tools offer a unique advantage to developers. Such tools can be utilized to keep track on the entire codebase along with every modification made. This helps developers to build up entire applications faster and ship a stable product. The use of versioning also diminishes the chance of downtimes as developers can quickly revert to earlier versions in case of problems. A Clojure developer with experience of working with version control systems will always have an advantage when applying for new jobs.

5. Interpersonal skills

Working in the modern software development industry requires a lot more than technical proficiency. Developers today need to undertake various responsibilities outside their core competencies. They often also need to collaborate with different cross-functional teams and interact with clients to produce high-quality software. For which, interpersonal skills play a huge part in today’s agile work culture. Developers need to actively interact and share their opinion from time to time to keep the chain of information flowing. So to find success working as a back-end integrations engineer, brushing up on language skills and openness to collaborate has become essential.
