Skills required to become a senior .NET developer
The first step of getting a high-paying senior .NET developer position is learning the fundamental skills that are essential for this job. Let’s take a look at exactly what they are!
1. Developer of Microsoft Certified Solutions (MCSD)
Earning an MCSD is very competitive, but the advantages of attaining this certification are significant. This .NET certification will help you distinguish yourself in your field if you pass the exams. If you have job experience in .NET development, this distinction may be easier to attain. Microsoft has defined this credential as “highly desired” among employers. Having an MCSD certificate is proof that you meet or exceed .NET development proficiency requirements, meaning employers are more likely to hire you over someone with just a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Earning an MCSD requires time and effort, so make sure to take time off when possible and review these resources before taking any of the required tests.
2. Databases
SQL knowledge helps you land remote .NET developer jobs. Knowledge of technologies such as Entity Framework will help you stand out in today's job market as a .NET developer. To land prominent remote .NET developer jobs, significant experience with SQL Server or Oracle would be required. Some applications now employ NoSQL databases like MongoDB or CouchDB, and knowing how to use them could help you earn more money.
3. ASP.NET MVC
In the world of .NET web development and programming, companies and developers alike are choosing the Microsoft ASP.NET MVC framework as their framework of choice for creating dynamic, interactive, and mobile-ready websites. Professionals in the field all agree that this open-source application framework is something you'll want to become familiar with if you plan on becoming a certified .NET developer. This powerful web application framework allows web developers to build beautiful websites using clean code and beautiful user interfaces which can be customized at will.
4. Client-Side Technologies
Developers with .NET programming skills are in high demand due to the stability of the language, vastly increased scalability when compared to similar languages, and flexibility when it comes to coding in either a web environment, console applications, desktop apps, or services. All of these abilities earn them a higher salary when paired with a strong portfolio of past work to reflect versatility. Some popular client-side web technologies that .NET developers must be familiar with are:
- HTML and CSS
- JavaScript
- jQuery
- Bootstrap
5. Most Valuable Professional (MVP) at Microsoft
This is another certification that will help you get hired as a Microsoft .NET Developer. The Microsoft MVP program is reputable and significantly helps with one's Search Engine Optimization. There are no strict requirements to being an MVP, but the Microsoft MVP award is only given to those who have demonstrated significant dedication to the Microsoft environment. Becoming an MVP will help you establish yourself as someone who has the knowledge, skills, and talents to be considered for .NET developer jobs. Because employers can see your track record of leadership via this popular program, it also allows you to negotiate a higher .NET developer salary over time.
