Job description

A venture-backed startup that has developed a solution that helps small to mid-sized moving companies provide better customer service in the move process with less use for paper is looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer. The selected candidate will be responsible for developing innovative automated solutions and tools to assist in debugging and resolving production problems and preventing them from recurring. The company focuses on building trust and transparency in moving while assisting small business owners in creating wealth and boosting the overall economy. Candidates with exceptional skills and confidence to undertake the challenges of working in a fast-paced startup environment are suitable for this position.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Proactively seek out system weaknesses and find ways to fix them before production issues arise
  • Utilize monitoring data, watching trends, and Chaos Engineering in your troubleshooting and debugging efforts
  • Focus on maximizing system uptime together with team members in an on-call rotation
  • Move out of your comfort zone and get involved in building the next generation of the product platform
  • Work closely with the VP of Engineering and be supported by your technical peers
  • Write, update, and effectively use the documentation, including runbooks and playbooks
  • Work as a self-motivated individual, taking ownership and bringing your authentic self to work 
  • Keep the assigned site or service operational, or quickly restore it if a failure occurs
  • Collaborate closely with internal partners and teams to ensure that software meets security, SLA, and performance standards
  • Automate tasks such as infrastructure requirements, testing, failover solutions, failure mitigation, and many others
  • Debug complex issues across an entire stack and come up with solid solutions
  • Create CI/CD processes to increase the pace
  • Use Chaos Engineering to put your creations through real-world testing
  • Showcase good judgment, especially in times of stress

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
  • At least 7+ years of experience with software engineering, software development, or system operations
  • Knowledge of Unix and Linux shells is required
  • Experience debugging complex problems, designing, building, and operating large-scale production systems
  • Knowledge of Python, Node, Java, Go, Rust, or similar
  • Familiarity with networking and messaging, especially between services
  • Experience using source control (Git, GitHub) and feature branching strategies
  • Proficiency in various open-source databases like MySQL, Postgres, Redis, Cassandra, etc.
  • Experience with DevOps engineering or SRE is nice to have
  • Knowledge of containers, such as Docker or Kubernetes, is preferred
  • Prolific skills in monitoring and observability, such as with Datadog, Sensu, New Relic, and Nagios, is nice to have
  • Familiarity with automating infrastructure, testing, and deployments using tools like Ansible, Chef, or Terraform and can explain the Infrastructure as Code paradigm 
  • Experience with configuration management, such as with Puppet, is nice to have
  • Knowledge of Chaos Engineering is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Validated and demonstrable track record of success with consumer-facing web/mobile development projects
  • Capability to accurately assess software tasks and work to a schedule
  • Capable of structuring and managing workflow and priorities independently
